Rational Choice Model

Rational choice theorists believe that illegal activity occurs when a reasoning individual decides to risk breaking the law after considering personal factors, such as the need for money, and situational factors, such as an available target. Before choosing to commit a crime, the person evaluates:

  • The risk of being caught
  • The severity of the punishment if caught
  • The value of the crime and
  • The need for the rewards of the criminal act

If economic benefits are lacking or the risk of getting caught is too great, the person may choose not to commit the crime. In this respect, some researchers believe that environmental factors, such as a security system, can help deter crime.
